Using English in the Netherlands

January 26, 2017

The University of Aruba (UA), Center for Lifelong Learning, invites you to the lecture: “Using English in the Netherlands: Improving social integration of Aruban students” on february 2nd from 5-6 pm at the Aula.

What role does the use of English play in the integration of Papiamento speaking students from Aruba into mainstream Dutch society?

Aruban Papiamento speakers who experience academic and adjustment difficulties while studying in the Netherlands are likely to say that their secondary education did not prepare them adequately for studying in Dutch (Bijl de Vroe 2015); Aruban students expect that the use of English in the Netherlands heightens this problem.

Our research shows, however, that Arubans’ use of English can influence the process of integration in the Netherlands positively, leading to more meaningful contact with Dutch speakers, better social integration, and possibly enhanced study success.
