What role does the use of\u00a0English<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0play in the integration of\u00a0Papiamento<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0speaking students from\u00a0Aruba<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0into mainstream\u00a0Dutch<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>society?<\/p>\n

Aruban Papiamento speakers<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0who experience academic and adjustment difficulties while studying in the\u00a0Netherlands<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0are likely to say that their\u00a0secondary education<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0did not prepare them adequately for studying in\u00a0Dutch<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(Bijl de Vroe 2015);\u00a0Aruban students<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>expect that the use of\u00a0English<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>in the\u00a0Netherlands<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>heightens this problem.<\/p>\n

Our research shows, however, that Arubans\u2019 use of\u00a0English<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0can influence the process of integration in the\u00a0Netherlands<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>positively, leading to more meaningful contact with\u00a0Dutch<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0speakers, better social integration, and possibly enhanced study success.<\/p>\n
