{"id":5326,"date":"2016-01-26T15:15:09","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T19:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ea.aw\/pages\/?p=5326"},"modified":"2017-11-28T10:21:48","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T14:21:48","slug":"world-languages-the-english-language-race-and-nationalism-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ea.aw\/pages\/world-languages-the-english-language-race-and-nationalism-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"World languages: the English language, race and nationalism in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<b> University of Aruba (UA)<\/b> in collaboration with the <b>University College Utrecht<\/b> invites you to a public lecture as part of the <b>UAUCU<\/b> undergraduate research exchange program: <b>World languages: the English language, race and nationalism in the US<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ea.aw\/images\/stories\/ph\/logo\/ua_logo.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"68\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 40px;\"><\/td>\n<td>This presentation examines systems of privilege that organize the study of &#8216;foreign&#8217; and &#8216;world&#8217; languages.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Through discursive framing, participants\u2019 written responses to a survey conducted at a university\u2019s &#8216;World Languages Day&#8217; reveal an alignment with hegemonic ideologies of race and nation that elevate English monolingualism as a proxy for a White, virtuous cultural order within which &#8216;World language&#8217; education safely\u2014and additively\u2014finds its place.<\/p>\n<p>The facilitator for this lecture is <i><b>Bradley Boovy<\/b><\/i>, he is Assistant Professor of German and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at <b>Oregon State University<\/b> (U.S.A.) His research focuses on queer publishing in the second half of the twentieth century with a particular emphasis on the role of race and transnationalism in structuring queer subjectivities in Germany and the United States. Recently he has also begun a project with his colleague <i><b>Adam Schwartz<\/b><\/i> on the ways in which notions of race and racialized identities influence students\u2019 acquisition of second languages.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Bradley Boovy<\/b><\/i> conducted and published this research together with <i><b>Adam Schwartz<\/b><\/i>, Assistant Professor of Spanish and Linguistics in the School of Language, Culture, and Society at <b>Oregon State University<\/b>.
